Happy New Year. With the snow melting, it is once again possible to think about baseball and Spring.
On behalf of Westport Baseball and Softball, which consists of Westport Little League Baseball (Pre-K through Grade 7), Advanced Baseball (Grades 8 through 12), Intermediate 50/70 Baseball (Grades 5 through 7), Westport Little League Softball (Pre-K through Grade 7) and the Challenger League (players ages 5 through 18 with mental or physical challenges), we encourage you to register your child and look forward to another season of America’s national past-time.
WHAT'S NEW IN SPRING 2018?
1. NEW BATS: As a reminder, Little League regulations for permissible bats have changed as of January 1. Players can only use a "USA Baseball" stamped bat during Little League practices and games.
2. INTEGRATION WITH WESTON: In order to maintain or expand the number of teams in our Cap 2 (second grade), AAA (5th grade) and Majors (5th (see Item 3), 6th and 7th grades) programs, Westport Little League and Weston Little League are in discussions to integrate these programs under the Westport Little League Baseball umbrella. We believe this will add an exciting new element to competitive play while preserving WLLB's rules and infrastructure and are currently exploring waivers from District 1 and District 2 to facilitate the combination. Our respective commissioners (see the WBS website for a list) have discussed the operational aspects with their Weston counterparts and can answer questions you may have.
3. PLAY-UP OPPORTUNITY FOR 11 YEAR FIFTH GRADERS: As explained in more detail below under "Age Requirements," Little League age 11 year old fifth graders (i.e., players 11 years old or turning 11 on or prior to August 31, 2018) will have the opportunity to try out to play in the Majors, rather than AAA.
4. BABE RUTH AND INTERMEDIATE 50/70 BASEBALL: We are pleased to offer enhanced Babe Ruth and Intermediate 50/70 baseball programs that are open to older children. See below for a description.
5. 12U SUMMER DISTRICT ALL STAR TEAM: We expect to introduce new procedures for selection of the 2018 Summer District 12U All Star Team, which are expected to include taking into account recommendations of Majors Head Coaches and may include Majors players votes as well. This should also inject more meaning into the Majors regular season.
SPRING REGISTRATION: Registration for the Spring season is open at and will remain open until March 2, 2018 (for A, AA, AAA and Majors) and April 6, 2018 (for Caps). Roster spots will not be guaranteed after such date.

AGE REQUIREMENTS: WLLB is generally organized by grade. However, please note that a child must have been born on or before December 31, 2013 to be eligible to play during the 2018 Spring season. In addition, the Majors division is intended for 6th and 7th graders who were born on or after May 1, 2005. (Children born before May 1, 2005 are welcome to play in the Advanced Baseball program. Please check the website for registration dates.) As you may know, effective in 2018, Little League has decided to move the age cut-off date from May 1 to September 1 in determining eligibility for each of its programs. While this does not affect WLLB, it does affect other programs in which Westport Little League participates (e.g., Summer District League competition).
In connection with this change, together with WLLB’s desire to field a sufficient number of competitive Majors teams, WLLB is offering current Little League age 11 5th graders (i.e., players 11 years old or turning 11 on or prior to August 31, 2018) an opportunity to be evaluated to play “up” in the Majors League. Prior to the evaluation date, we will notify parents of the maximum number of 5th graders who may be deemed “draft eligible” to play in the Majors. This decision will be based on several factors, including the number of players who register to play in the Majors and the impact on the AAA League. Those 5th graders who decline to play in the Majors, or are not deemed draft eligible following evaluations, will play with their grade in the AAA League.
EVALUATIONS: Evaluations for LL 11 year olds in 5th grade who seek to play in the Majors will be held on Saturday,March 3 at the Staples High School Fieldhouse.
Evaluations for children in Grades 3 through 7 will be held on Saturday,March 10 at the Staples High School Fieldhouse.
Times will be announced and posted on our website. There are NO evaluations for children in Grades Pre-K through 2.
BABE RUTH BASEBALL: We plan to field teams in the 13u Prep and 15u Majors divisions this Spring. There are no tryouts for the Babe Ruth teams. All players who sign up by the registration deadline will be placed on a team, provided we are able to make up reasonable sized teams. The Babe Ruth teams play a schedule with one weekday game and games on the weekends. There will also be one practice during the week. The teams will be coached by professional coaches, but will require assistance from parents. We play in the Fairfield Babe Ruth league against other towns that are generally within a half hour commute. Half of our games are expected to be at home.
Prep Babe Ruth (13U) level includes players who will be 13 years old on April 30, 2018. The season will begin mid-April through late June.
Majors Babe Ruth (15U) level includes players who will be 14 or 15 on April 30, 2018. The Majors season is divided into two parts. The Dogwood Season will begin in mid-April and is for 14 and 15 year olds not playing on a high school team. Once the high school season ends in late May, we may adjust rosters to accommodate players cycling in or out of the teams and play the Major League Season.
INTERMEDIATE 50/70 BASEBALL: This program is intended for LL-age 11, 12 and 13 year olds. Team(s) will play local area town teams on a field slightly larger than those at Town Farms. Players will be leading off bases and pitching from the stretch. Games are 7 innings, with no doubleheaders. For 11's and 12's, participation is intended to be supplemental to a player's primary Little League Spring baseball team. For 13's, this team provides a fun and final opportunity to play spring baseball on the 50/70 field before advancing to 60/90. As a Little League program, coaches are parent volunteers, and there are no cuts. Parents of 11's should first consider that their child will be playing with 13 year-old players. 50/70 Intermediate offers players focused on other travel sports a flexible opportunity to play 50/70 baseball. Depending on availability of players and the team's competitiveness, WLLB may choose to participate in the 50/70 Intermediate District summer tournament.
CHALLENGER LEAGUE BASEBALL. This league, which focuses on fun and building life-long friendships, is open to boys and girls, age 5 through 18, with mental or physical challenges. Challenger also seeks volunteer children age 9 and up to serve as buddies during the games, most of which will be played on Saturdays and/or Sundays.
YOUTH TRAVEL BASEBALL: Children participating in any of our Youth Travel Baseball programs (8U through 12U) this Spring must, as a condition to their participation in our Youth Travel Baseball programs, also register for and play in Westport's 2018 Spring Little League.
DISTRICTS BASEBALL AND OTHER SUMMER PROGRAMS: Any child who wishes to try out for and play on any Westport Districts All-Star Team (9U through 12U) or participate in any Westport summer baseball program must register for and play in Westport's 2018 Spring Little League.

WLLB manages programs for hundreds of children each Spring, and we do our best to form balanced teams. Due to the size of our program, the complexity of populating teams and the volunteer nature of our organization, we unfortunately cannot honor requests for children to be placed on a particular team or with a specific coach or other player. However, for Cap K through Cap 2 (Grades pre-K through 2nd Grade), teams generally include players from the same elementary school. Teams for A, AA, AAA and Majors (Grades 3 through 7) are chosen via draft.
Refunds (less a $25 processing fee) can be issued upon written request to
prior to the announcement of team rosters. After team rosters are announced, refunds will only be issued (on a pro-rata basis) for season-ending injuries upon a written request to
. Such request must be accompanied by a doctor's note.
Our programs could not exist without parent coaches who generously volunteer their time. For parents who would like to volunteer as a head coach or an assistant coach, please check the appropriate box on your child’s registration form. The WLLB commissioners will choose a head coach and at least one assistant coach for each team. Once teams are formed, each team can add another coach (approved by WLLB) who is a parent of a child on the roster.
If your child is in the 6th grade or older and is interested in working as an umpire and earning money this Spring, please sign up in registration.
Westport Baseball & Softball is a nonprofit organization that, among other things, funds repairs and capital improvements of fields in town. If you wish to support the organization and its programs by making a tax deductible donation, please do so by entering an amount in the donation box on the registration form. This amount will be added to your total at the end of registration. Please note that all donations made via Little League registration will be utilized exclusively to support Little League programs.
